Located on M-25 is between Port Austin and Port Hope is the Huron City Museums. With 10 buildings built back in the late nineteenth century, Huron City Museums keeps The Thumb of the past alive today. Huron City Museums has a number of events through out the summer months, and I made it out to the annual saw mill day. Huron City was founded originally as a lumber town, and saw mill day rekindles the original spirit of the first residents. With a number of events showcasing skills and tools from the last 150 years, I enjoyed watching all the classic machinery still working today. Of course there were a number of steam powered tractors turning saw blades and watched as they cut logs into planks just like they did over 100 years ago. In addition to the saw mills running, there were a number of local artisans showing off their handywork. I watched as a woman painstakingly threaded a wicker chair by hand in an intricate design, and enjoyed a group of ladies spinning wool into yarn with their spinning wheels, and watched a traditional blacksmith hammer hot iron into form. Watching these skilled craftsmen made me think about how easy we have it today. After looking at the outdoor exhibits, I walked through some of the buildings including the carriage house and the church. Guided tours are available for all all the buildings where plenty of history about each is shared, I decided to save the full tour for another day.
Huron City Museums is open everyday from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and on weekends after Labor Day. Huron City Museums is the spirit of the historic Thumb and brings plenty of educational, family fun.
