Welcome to the Huron County Community Fair 2007This year brings one of the favorite local thumb area fairs, the 2007 Huron Community Fair at the  fairgrounds in Bad Axe. Running from August 5th through the 11th, you will find plenty of family fun, local entertainment, carnival rides,  Grandstand events,  livestock shows, and much more. This fair is really the spirit of  Huron county and rivals the county fair as the most popular  fair in Huron county.

Every day of the Huron Community fair is packed with plenty of activities for the entire family. From the farm animal exhibitions, to the demolition derby there is pretty much non stop country fun. There is something for everyone so be sure to spend a day at the Huron Community Fair and experience much of the local flavor of Huron county.

I made it out to the fair on Monday which was kids day. Its only $3 to get in and much of the fair is free. There is an additional entrance fee for many of the Grandstand events, but if you check the Huron Community Fair Events Schedule there are some that are free if you go on the right day. I enjoyed watching the horse pull teams and checking out the local merchant tables. You never know what to expect from the vendors and its always nice to see the local artisan goods.

The midway was active with children, teens, and families enjoying the nice variety of rides and carnival games. Plenty of fair goers were enjoying the 4-H and Future Farmers of America animals on display as well as having dinner at the many food carts. I strolled through all the buildings and there are plenty of rabbits, horses, pigs, goats and of course cows all competiting to be the best of the fair. My day at the Huron Community Fair came to a close with watching the 4-H king and queen being crowned as well as a new Huron county bean queen being choosen. This was a popular event and the Arena was quiet full.

The Huron Community Fair is an annual event that really showcases much of what Huron county has to offer. If you have never been, you should make an effort to attend as it is a good time with friendly people.

Bayport Fish Sandwich Festival 2007 Print E-mail

 Bayport Hotel

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Bayport Fish Sandwich Festival. Now you might think to yourself a fish sandwich festival? I have never heard of such a thing. Well then you have never been to Bayport Michigan, home of a festival for fish sandwiches.

Bayport has a long history as a fishing community, and the Fish Sandwich Festival keeps the fisherman spirit alive. Bayport is loacted on Wild Fowl Bay on the west side of the thumb at the mouth of Saginaw Bay. Bayport is still home to the world's largest fresh water fishery, and attracts plenty of boaters, hunters, and vacationers each Local Honeyyear that enjoy the relaxing town on the bay.

The 2007 Fish Sandwich Festival was a nice family event as it is every year, featuring plenty of local entertainment, craft vendors, a petting zoo, horse rides, helicopter rides, face painging, and of course fish sandwiches. Vacationers enjoy the many artisan waresI made it to the festival on Saturday and they had already sold out of the origianl fish sandwich, so I went with the whitefish sandwich. It was a good sandwich of locally caught fish deep fryed in peanut oil.

Ill have to go back next year and get there early so I can try the original fish sandwich that the festival is known for. There was a nice collection of chainsaw sculptures on display, showing off some of the local artisan skills. There was a nice mix of locals residents as well as vacationers looking for deals at the vendors booths.

Local chainsaw sculptures workChainsaw sculpture Chainsaw sculpture Crane

During my time there I watched dancers from Sherry's  Dance Studio perform and they were fun to watch. Local country group 100 proof also performed, they were good and played a nice selection of country, blues, and classic rock that was a good soundtrack to enjoying the Bayport Fish Sandwich Festival.

Huron County Sheriff Kent Tibbits gets ready to enjoy a whitefish sandwich at the 2007 Bayport Fish Sandwich Festival

There was plenty of parking and the locals are very nice. I even had a chance to meet the Huron County Sheriff, Kent Tibbits as he sat down at the same table I was at. We ate lunch together at the pavilion and chatted about how the thumb is a great place to live..

All in all, Bayport is a litle bit off the main path but its worth a trip out there to spend the day taking in the local flavor at the Fish Sandwich Festival. While not quiet as popular as some of the bigger festivals around the thumb, the Bayport Fish Sandwich Festival has unique character that is a fun experience.
